Halloween and Trick-or-Treating

Halloween’s origins date back to the Celts who celebrated their new year on November 1st. They believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the dead and living became blurred. Sacred bonfires were lit on that night, and during the celebration, the Celts wore costumes — animal skins. By the 9th century Christianity had spread into Celtic lands and gradually blended with and replaced the old Celtic rites. All Souls Day was a day to honor those who had passed. And the evening before All-Hallow’s Eve was a time for bonfires and parades. It was also a time to dress in costumes of saints, angels, and devils.

The celebration of Halloween was limited in Colonial America, but gradually evolved into a holiday of telling ghost stories, dressing in costumes, going door-to-door to ask for food and money, and playing pranks. At times the popularity of Halloween has waned and customs have changed with the times, but a resurgence in holiday celebrations began to take place between the 1920’s and 1950’s and was an inexpensive way for families and communities to celebrate the holiday together and “treats” were away to ward off “tricks”.

Trick-or-treating as we know it, going from house to house in search of candy, chocolate and other goodies, has been a popular tradition in the U.S. and many other countries for over 100 years. Americans spend an estimated $6-9 billion annually on Halloween, making it the second largest commercial holiday in the nation.
